What about shares? Owning a share means you own an individual piece of a company, e.g. you can buy a share in Air New Zealand or Fisher and Paykel Healthcare to name two New Zealand based companies. Shares in any company go up and down based on the supply and demand for the company\u2019s shares.<\/p>\n

You can also buy shares of big international companies like Apple or Google. You might need to start by buying a portion of a share \u2013 they can be hundreds of dollars for one share!<\/p>\n

Some companies that you can buy shares in may issue a dividend. <\/strong>A dividend is a portion of a company\u2019s earnings that is paid to shareholders (a person that owns a share in that company). These are usually paid based on how many shares you have in the company. On some share investment platforms, you can choose to automatically reinvest your dividend into the company. Note: not all stocks pay dividends.<\/em><\/p>\n You can buy and sell shares that are based in New Zealand, Australia or worldwide.
