Ben Black (Kāti Huirapa) recently withdrew his Whai Rawa savings to purchase his first home. There may not be anything unusual about that, but Ben, 27, is one of the few bucking the trend that media would have us believe, by being a homeowner at an early age. On average New Zealander’s purchase their first home in their 30’s.
Ben has been exposed to the farming sector his whole life so it is no surprise he manages the 220 hectare whānau farm with 780 dairy cows in North Canterbury. He could have utilised his Whai Rawa savings towards his studies, but chose to undertake workplace training in a learn-as-you-earn capacity. The decision to take on this element of training seems to have paid dividends with his recent home purchase, although he is not ruling out other lines of study in the future.
