So you can invest into individual company shares or you can also invest into a group of shares – like a basket. This ‘basket’ is known as a managed fund and can include companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Tesla etc. As funds are managed, there will be fees payable, so look for this when you’re doing your research!
A manager or team of managers choose what companies should go into the ‘basket’, and they attempt to outperform the market. There could also be other types of assets in the managed fund, such as property and fixed interest. The fund options in Whai Rawa and most KiwiSaver schemes are good examples of these types of managed funds!
You can also look to invest in active or passive groups of shares. This depends on the company who manages the groups of shares as to how they operate. Active share managers and companies will do their best to have the best group – and outperform average groups of shares. Passive managers will let long-term growth dictate an approach that doesn’t get them too involved in the combinations. There is always a debate around which is better, it is your personal preference as to which you choose. If you need further support or advice on which company to use or which approach to investing suits you, a financial advisor can help. Visit Financial Advice NZ – Find an Adviser
