BEING THE HOST WITH THE MOST WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK

Do you get excited or nervous about celebration season? The mix of warm weather and end of year hākari season is both exciting and a little nerve wracking if your whare is normally at the center of numerous celebrations.

Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or just a casual get-together, these events are vital for keeping whānau and friends connected. But hosting can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when trying to keep an eye on your pūtea!

Here’s the exciting news though! You don’t have to break the bank or throw your savings out the window, to create memorable events that everyone will love. Here are our top tips for being the hostess with the mostest… without breaking the bank!

Plan Ahead and Set a Budget

Before diving headfirst into preparations, set yourself a clear budget. Determine how much you can comfortably spend and stick to it. Planning ahead gives time to source affordable options and avoid last-minute expenses. Create a checklist of what needs to be done and allocate your budget accordingly.

Key Points:

  • Establish a total budget for the event
  • Prioritise essential items
  • Stick to your budget to avoid overspending, but also make sure you have budgeted for unexpected costs.

Kai & Beverages

A potluck meal can be a fantastic way to share the responsibility and cost of food. Ask whānau members to bring their favourite dish to share. This not only lightens your load but also adds variety to the meal. Maybe there are hunters or kaihao in your whānau? We’re sure they would love to show off a recent prize!

Key Points:

  • Host a potluck or discuss sharing food or preparation costs
  • Assign different types of dishes (e.g., mains, desserts) to different whānau members
  • DIY Drinks: Make your own punch or lemonade instead of buying pre-made beverages.

DIY Decorations and Activities

Get creative with decorations and activities. Handmade decorations can add a personal touch and are often much cheaper than store-bought items. Consider simple DIY projects like bunting, paper lanterns, or themed table settings. For activities, plan some fun, low-cost games or crafts that can be enjoyed by all age groups.

Key Points:

  • Make decorations at home using materials you already have
  • Outdoor Fun: Utilise outdoor spaces for games and activities that don’t require extra costs, like a family rugby match or frisbee
  • DIY Craft Stations: Set up a craft station with supplies you already have for kids to enjoy.

Other ideas to help keep the cost down include:

Use Reusables: Opt for reusable plates, cups, and utensils to avoid the cost (and landfill) of disposable items.

Share Resources: Share serving platters or tableware with friends or whānau if needed.

Repurpose Existing Items: Use what you already own creatively, such as using glass jars as drink dispensers or old sheets as tablecloths.
