Investing

Are you wondering… how to start investing with just a little money?

Sorted says you don’t need a huge amount of pūtea to start investing. Even a small amount will get you started on your journey. It can help to map out your budget though so that you can allocate more pūtea towards investing. The more you can invest, the better your results be.  Sorted.org.nz have a budgeting calculator to help get you started at www.sorted.org.nz/tools/budgeting-tool/

If you are a Whai Rawa member, you are already investing! And the same concept applies to Whai Rawa. If you can invest a little often you are creating great saving habits and benefits for future you! You can find out more about your Whai Rawa investment here www.whairawa.com/money/investment-information/

Are you just wondering… if there are risks in investing?

Sorted says that no investment is entirely risk-free, but the level of risk can vary greatly. If an investment seems too good to be true, it probably is.

The main risk is that our money may not be there when we need it, our investments could lose value, or we may not receive all of our money back when we need to/or can withdraw it.  It is important to do your due diligence, so here are some tips!

  • Make sure you do your research before investing, take the time to understand risk and assess fees
  • Use information from trusted sources like the FMA and Sorted.org.nz or the Financial Services Council
  • Avoid basing investment decisions purely on advice or tips from individuals on social media or by word of mouth

Are you just wondering… when to start planning for retirement?

Sorted says it’s never too early – and we at Whai Rawa agree! In fact, the earlier you begin, the more you can achieve over time. People tend to underestimate how much they can achieve in the long run.

Check out the Sorted.org.nzretirement calculator here www.sorted.org.nz/tools/retirement-calculator and head to over to Sorted.org.nz for more information and resources!

Just wondering…. how much you need for retirement?

Sorted says that your answer depends on your lifestyle goal! Simply put, if you can fund your lifestyle target, you have enough! But what if you are not sure what your goal should be? It helps to have a look at what retirees are spending today in terms of a ‘no frills’ or ‘choices’ lifestyle. You may find your retirement number is lower than you think. Check out Sorted for more information www.sorted.org.nz/6-steps-to-get-your-money-sorted/work-out-your-retirement-number

Remember to factor in your Whai Rawa as an extra amount you can access from the age of 55. For more about retirement withdrawals work for Whai Rawa head to https://whairawa.com/my-account/withdrawals/

Just wondering… if you should clear debt before retiring?

Sorted says ideally, yes. For most of us, retirement means stepping back from paid mahi and living with more of a fixed and typically reduced income, which can make carrying debt all the heavier. And the less we can use our retirement savings for paying back debt, the better. Check out Sorted’s debt and mortgage calculators to help you plan the quickest way out of debt before you retire: www.sorted.org.nz/tools
